Our history

St. Mark's Tollington Park started life in 1845 when two men, Mr. William Bainbridge and Rev. Robert Gwilt, donated a plot of land to the Church Comissioners specifically for the construction of a new church which was finally built in 1854. In total, St. Mark's cost £5,000 to build with the current vicarage built some years later.
The first incumbent of St. Mark’s was the Rev. John Lees who was appointed in May 1854 as Vicar until his death on 6th March 1873. His successor, Rev. Ambrose Lawson, was vicar of the parish for just three days after dying two days after arriving at St. Mark's as Vicar.
Since then, St. Mark's has resisted the Blitz during the Second World War and has lasted for over 150 years thanks to God and the faith of the congregation and continues to be a flourishing community of believers.
